It’s almost Summer and that means Tennis!
As some Chessington residents may be aware, Chessington has some currently unused tennis courts, located next to and owned by Chessington Cricket Club, located just off Barwell Lane (see the map).
These unused tennis courts may not have had much attention in recent years but they have not gone unnoticed by Chessington resident and qualified Tennis coach, Joshua (Josh) Mills, who also runs Tennis Coach Kingston
Josh has started a campaign to get them back in public use, but we need the community to help! Josh has approached Chessington Cricket Club and they have agreed to let Josh use them for community tennis coaching. But unfortunately the courts (2 lawn and 1 hard) have fallen in to disrepair and Josh is looking for assistance to get them resurfaced, tidied up and purchase new nets.
Can you help? We need funding, hands on help in tidying up and general support. Do you know a business, organisation or charity fund that can help serve tennis back to Chessington?
In return for getting the courts up and running Josh has pledged create a community tennis programme, including schools, organisations and members of the public.
Josh said “This tennis programme will include tennis taster sessions and trials, after school tennis for children, adult group sessions, social tennis sessions where people can drop in, play singles or doubles against other people“.
Free taster sessions have already been run at Hinchley Wood Primary School, Christ Church Infant and Junior School and Auriol Junior School.
Josh is passionate that everyone should have free access to tennis, even just to try it! He told Chessington Community Matters; “This is a fantastic opportunity to get this community into tennis, no paying for membership and affordable coaching; we just need a venue to provide quality coaching and accessible tennis.” Josh’s has ambition for the Barwell Lane courts, “it even has 2 grass courts, we could have the next thing to Wimbledon on your door step what could be better! To make this happen, we need you!”
Josh has also committed to running fun tennis weekends every 2 to 3 months at various Chessington locations, watch Chessington Community Matters for more details as they are announced. “This tennis weekend will include free coaching from 10am-2pm on both Saturday and Sunday for adults and children .”
